INTRODUCTION

Established in 2015, the Department of English at Khushal Khan Khattak University, Karak, has emerged as a centre of academic excellence, advancing interdisciplinary and transcultural engagements in English language and literary studies. With an aim to produce intellectually empowered learners equipped with critical, analytical, and transferable skills, the Department integrates pedagogical innovation with scholarly rigour. The curriculum encompasses a wide range of thematic and theoretical concerns, spanning from Greek and Shakespearean studies to Romantic, Victorian, British, American, African, and South Asian literatures, and from Postmodern to Contemporary Critical and Cultural Theory. Additionally, the curriculum is dynamically inclusive of the emerging domains within Language and Linguistics, particularly those aligned with the broader social sciences. The Department actively nurtures glocal perspectives—blending global academic discourse with local cultural relevance.

The department regularly convenes BoS and GSC meetings. 07 Board of Studies (BoS) and 04 Graduate Study Committee (GSC) meetings have been convened to ensure consistent academic and research quality of the existing programs.

Teaching is conducted through dialogic and reflective methods, replacing the instructive-unilateral mode with a collaborative educational ethos. As an academic entity, the Department has prospered by fostering cooperation rather than competition. The pedagogical philosophy favors reflective and dialogic engagement over unidirectional instruction.

The department has set up two forums that play a vital role in coordinating its academic, research, literary, and socio-cultural initiatives. 1) The Council of Academic Research and Dialogue (CARD), a departmental body recommended by the BoS serves as a platform to stimulate academic discourse on societal and cultural challenges through critical engagement and interdisciplinary dialogue. The Khushal Baba Seminar Series, is one such coveted regular feature of CARD, launched in honour of Khushal Khan Khattak that has been continuously shaping the department’s intellectual landscape through impactful seminars and capacity-building workshop for the students and community at large. 2) The Bards, established in April 2017, the literary club within the department has been nurturing a space for student creativity.
